A Few Things To Remember When Picking Good Health Insurance

By: Donald Saunders

With such a large number of options on offer when you examine health insurance policies it's difficult to know just what you should look for when you're trying to purchase a good health insurance plan which will meet your needs.

Your starting point has to be to decide precisely what your particular needs are. For example, do you need insurance coverage for only yourself or are you looking for a plan which will cover you and your spouse or your whole family? Of course this is a relatively simple question but the next one is a bit trickier. What precisely are your health insurance needs? Are you and other people who have to be included in the plan healthy or do you (or they) have any pre-existing conditions which will have to be taken into consideration? Does anyone have special medical needs or will they need to be treated by certain medical practitioners or in particular medical institutions?

Next, you need to understand the options which are open to you if youre organizing coverage through a group scheme provided by your employer. In this instant your options are restricted to those which are provided under the plan which the company is offering and this may or may not make your decision simpler. If you're not considering coverage under an employer's group plan then you'll have to have a basic understanding of the difference between an indemnity plan and a managed care plan.

An indemnity plan gives you the freedom to select where and when you seek medical assistance. This degree of freedom will generally be accompanied by high out-of-pocket expenses but in most cases this is a reasonable trade-off. Managed care plans, by contrast, are much more restrictive and you will be required to seek treatment from practitioners and at facilities within the managed care plan's network. For treatment which is beyond what might generally be classified as basic care you will also usually need to get approval. Costs within managed care plans are less than those experienced within indemnity policies and if you're not especially concerned about where and by whom your treatment is carried out, or must keep an eye on medical expenses, then managed care plans could well be a good choice for you. Naturally this is a very simplistic comparison and you will have to look into this further depending upon your own particular circumstances.

Once you've decided what type of plan you want, the next question is how do you set about selecting the right insurance provider. There is a huge number of companies providing health insurance policies today ranging from quite small independent firms to the corporate giants with household names. As with any major purchase, and health insurance today most certainly falls into this bracket, you must do your homework before making a final choice.

An excellent starting point might be to ask colleagues and friends or indeed your own doctor. The Internet can also give you a great deal of information about the whole range of health insurers.
