Do It Properly And Submitting Articles Will Get Your Website On The First Page Of The Search Engine Results

The aim for the majority of website operators is to get a flow of free traffic and that entails getting your website listed on the first page of the natural search results for the main search engines, including the big three of Yahoo, Google and MSN.

A few years ago that was reasonably easy even in competitive markets but nowadays it has become very much harder as the Internet has grown rapidly and the search engines have become very much more sophisticated in their assessment of website and their determination of just which websites should be given prominence in their listings.

In this short article we will assume that you are familiar with the ins and outs of article writing and do not intend to look at this particular subject. Here, our attention is focused upon how to go about submitting your articles to the article directories.

Opinions are mixed here and, as with anything else in the world of search engine optimization, you would be well advised to try out various different approaches and to carefully document what you do and the results you get. Then, once you have gathered enough data you will discover that it is a fairly simple thing to see exactly what works and what does not. An alternative is merely to listen to what other people are saying on the subject although the difficulty here is that there is a great deal of misinformation around either from individuals who have little or no real knowledge and are merely trying to sell you something or from people who would deliberately mislead you because they see you as a possible competitor.

Your first option is to hand submit your articles. With literally hundreds of article directory sites at your disposal this is not a workable option, unless you limit yourself to submitting to only the main, established and high traffic article directories. This is possible and indeed there are a lot of people who believe that this is the best option because they argue that the vast majority of article directory sites have little if any standing as far as the search engines are concerned and so few visitors that they will attract little traffic to your articles and not do a great deal to get your articles picked up and distributed by other webmasters.

Your second option is to submit your articles to a wide range of article directories which means making use of a submission service or some sort of article submission software.

There are several submission services, but only a handful will provide you with a good service and give you the confidence that your articles has been submitted to a specific list of sites within a reasonable time frame. The main drawback to submission services is that they require you to commit yourself to an ongoing monthly or annual payment and they are often extremely expensive.

If you feel that this is an option which appeals to you then you should check out various options and should look carefully at exactly what each product will and will not do. For instance, does the software semi-automate or fully automate the process? How many article directory sites can the program submit to? Can you add your own list of article directories to the program? Are you provided with a submission log so that you can see easily how successful each article submission has been?

One final consideration is whether you should submit the same article to the article directories, or should produce a series of 'unique' articles from your original article so that each directory receives a different version of your article? A lot of people will tell you that it does not matter and that the current debate about duplicate content is considerably overblown. Others however will tell you that, although it may not appear to be important in the short term, in the longer run the search engines will discount a lot of your article links as they find that they are from identical articles. Once again the secret here is to test for yourself and see exactly what sort of results you get.

If you do decide that submitting unique articles is the best route to follow then you should investigate the wide range of article rewriting software available. Once more take the time to look at each program very carefully. Most programs are very fast and easy to operate, but also create very poor quality articles. However, there are a few programs which, despite the fact that they do require a little more work, produce some excellent results. You can also get some programs which will not simply produce unique articles but also output them ready for importing directly into various article submission programs.

There is no doubt that submitting articles does work when it comes to building links to your website and will bring in free search engine traffic. However, you do need to setup a submission process which suits your work routine and budget and that means testing the system until you get the results you want.
