How To Get Rid Of Zits

By: Sharron Nixon

So how to get rid of zits is the question? First of all, lets have a look at what we mean by zits. This has been a name coined to include various skin conditions such as pimples, whiteheads, blackheads and spots being a few. There are as many different names as there are conditions. The most collective name given to all these skin conditions is acne. And like it or not, even some of the most polished movie stars suffer.

Acne occurs when hair follicles are clogged by dead skin cells. There are many forms of acne, all with different characteristics; some just down right annoying, and some that can be quite serious and require medical attention.

Acne vulgaris is the most common form of the condition, and is what most people think of when they are talking about spots and zits. Acne rosacea is more of an inflammation of the face, neck or chest than a true acne, resulting in red, bumpy, oily skin. It commonly appears in people aged 30 to 60. Acne rosacea is often accompanied by acne vulgaris. Many other types of acne exist, however.

Acne conglobata is a rare form that usually affects males, covering the back, chest, and buttocks with pustules that often connect under the skin: a rare and extreme form of acne conglobata is acne fulminans, which is a serious condition and requires prompt medical attention.

Acne cosmetica, as the name implies, is triggered by topical make-up. Appearing as small pink bumps, acne cosmetica is usually quite mild, and does not generally involve scarring.

Cystic acne is one of the most severe forms of acne, occurring when an infected pimple erupts beneath the skin, rather than on the surface. While this usually occurs spontaneously, cystic acne can be caused by scratching and picking at pimples.

Acne medicamentosa is caused by reactions to medications or drugs. Women often experience this form of acne when starting or ending birth control pills.

Comedonal acne is characterized by whiteheads and blackheads, without any other forms of skin lesions.

So, how to get rid of zits? The best way is to practice prevention, which actually means preventing outbreaks. There is plenty you can do to avoid an outbreak, ranging from the day-to-day basics like keeping your skin clean, hand washing, not touching your face and simple personal hygiene precautions.

Funnily enough, many of the tips for a healthy life will go a long way towards getting rid of zits. A good healthy diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables is a great start, as is drinking plenty of good, old-fashioned water. Plenty of sleep, exercise and limiting stress are all important.

One of the most hidden causes of zits comes in the form of air pollution. Because its one of those hidden nasties, it tends to go unnoticed as a cause for skin outbreaks.

There are also many acne products on the market, but these will not help at all if your own personal hygiene practices are not up to scratch, and you don't pay attention to your everyday personal habits.

You can use the assorted acne products that clean the skin, but avoid those products that claim to dry out your skin as you may just be buying into another problem!
